During the week from November 17th to November 23rd, the 2002 Latin American IEEE Circuits and Systems Society (CAS) tour on Nanotechnology and Gigascale systems took place in México, Colombia and Argentina. Seven talks by Prof. Leon O. Chua, Dr. Bing Sheu, Prof. Wolfgang Porod, Prof. Andreas Andreou, Prof. Martin Hänggi, Prof. Angel Rodriguez Vazquez, and Dr. Pedro Julián constituted the heart of the event.  In addition, in México and Colombia paper presentations were included to complement the event. With more than 500 participants the CAS tour was a complete success. Click here for images of the event.

Organization

The event was organized by Dr. Pedro Julián, Universidad Nacional del Sur, Argentina and Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, US and sponsored by Dr. Sergio Lima Netto, Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro, Rio de Janeiro, Brazil who is Region 9 VP of the IEEE CAS society.

Why Nanotechnology and Giga-Scale systems ?

Some time ago, when I was asked by Prof. Bing Sheu (by way of Dr. Juan Cousseau who was the current vice-chair of CAS Region 9), I offered my help in this new initiative of Nanotechnology and Giga-scale systems. I understand the potential and the projection of the field in the following years. In addition, being originally from a South-American country, I am also concerned in generating a conscience about this in the Latin-American scientific community.

As a consequence, I decided to promote a tour of CAS distinguished lecturers on topics of nanotechnology and giga-scale systems in Region 9. I decided to use the existing figure of the CAS tour, which is a CAS-supported initiative that started a couple of years ago (1997) proposed by Prof. Silva Martinez. Previous experiences included Brasil and Argentina and covered topics of microelectronics and communications. These events demonstrated to be an excellent way to bring together researchers from abroad and from Latin America, and many interesting initiatives have started since then.

I will continue working closely with the local organizing committees, with the vice-chair of region 9, and with the lecturers, in order to assure the success of the event
